Huh, I read it as stopping him from kicking him in the head, but on looking back that's just my inference, it could just as well be killing him. And yeah, you're right, that does sound like the moment when she commits. But the 'call your boss' stuff suggests that she's already deep enough in by then that she thinks the FM wouldn't want her harmed.
I thought the FM v1 was supposed to be Albert Woodville-Gentle or whatever his name was, the old man who Varvara is guarding/nursing in bk 3 and who turns up dead at the end. And Peter repeatedly perceives the current FM as a younger man, and he refers to Nightingale as an anachronism. On the other hand, when Peter asks him why he's wearing a mask, the FM replies that he was expecting to meet Nightingale, which is suggestive - perhaps Nightingale would recognise his face even if Peter wouldn't. (Could he be one of Nightingale's relatives? Now that would be interesting. We don't actually _know_ that Nightingale never married/had children, either.)
But yes, plenty of potential for other wizards to show up from the past. And even though I mostly agree with the common fanon that Nightingale is gay, I am sorely tempted to ship him with Varvara even so.
I have to say, the odds of him knowing Lord Peter Wimsey went up exponentially with that little nugget of backstory. ;)
Great minds! I desperately want to cross RoL over with everything I can think of, and I have been wondering about Charles Parker interacting with the Folly. I suspect Lord Peter would be unimpressed with them given that they sat out WW1. Or ooh, Miss Climpson could uncover something weird when one of her girls goes to do some typing for the Folly.
