Hello again! *no worries, you'll be rid of me again once I can move my wrist and am back at work ;)*

Ok, finished my re-listen of Foxglove Summer (taking notes), it makes more sense now. Still have questions, talking about those later, cause...

... managed to get a hold of the next books/comics, yay!

The comic, Night Witch, looks great, can hardly wait, but 'What Abigail did that summer' is supposed to come before, being set at the same time Peter is having his out-of-London adventure? So I guess I should read that first.
It's just, I've got the German version, and that looks very much like a YA thing? It's called 'Die Füchse von Hampstead Heath: Eine Abigail-Kamara-Story' - 'The foxes of Hampsted Heath: a Abigail-Kamara-Story', where Peter Grant's magically highly gifted cousin [...]. And it's supposed to use 'youth language'? And... I'm not that fond of Abigail, being stuck with plenty of annoying cousins myself...

So I guess my question is: is it a nice piece of worldbuilding, with more insights into Nightingale, the Rivers-of-London magic and the demi-monde?

And I am somewhat spoilered, it features her disabled brother? As I'm caring for a severely disabled person at home as well, who will not get 'better' again, I suppose I'm even more wary.

Happy about any tips/comments!

There will be no spoilers in this post, it's more about general vibes than anything.

I liked Amongst Our Weapons a lot better than False Value, and it also felt more like a Rivers of London book than False Value did. Partly, that "feeling like Rivers of London" is a product of Peter being undercover in FV and on his regular police duties on AOW. But on the other hand, Peter was undercover for much of Broken Homes, and that one still feels like a Rivers of London book to me. (Peter was undercover for all of FV instead of only part of it, but he was ALSO doing magic police work on the side, so I'm not sure that the ratio of "undercover work" to "ordinary magic policing" was actually that different.)

In a conversation in [personal profile] sixthlight's journal, I realized why FV doesn't feel much like a Rivers of London novel. It's because the theme of the book is, in many ways, about isolation and tearing down the relationships Peter spends the book building. And most RoL books are about the opposite. There is a constant stream of new people getting introduced and brought back as recurring characters. There is a constant sense that the Folly's understanding of the demimonde and the magical world is being expanded through Peter's community building and his compulsive networking. But while Peter does learn more about magic and the demimonde throughout the world in FV, there is no networking. There is no community being built. Peter goes in alone, and he comes back out alone, and everything he built and every relationship he made is temporary and ends as the book does. And regardless of the quality of writing and storytelling, that is always going to be less interesting to me than a typical RoL book.

Hello again ;)

Slowly catching up! Being home sick (wrecked wrist) has some advantages... reading/listening time!

Finished listening to 'Foxglove Summer'...

... and can't help but wonder: are there bits missing in the audio version?

Not only does the recording stop before the end of the book (there has to be at least one chapter, likely more, missing) there are so many narrative strands flapping about untied-up.

I suppose I'll have to figure out how to get to the library and lend the book...

Hello there!

Glad to have found fellow readers of the series!

So, I started listening to the audiobook of 'Rivers of London' last year, or possibly the year before, but couldn't deal with the guy who does the voice-acting, so gave up again, just a few minutes in. Was pretty torn about that, 'cause a) don't like to give up on books, b) I'm not a native speaker, but I'm fine with Stephen Fry doing Harry Potter, had no problems listening to that and James Marsters voice-acting the Dresden Files is just awesome.

Anyway, gave it another shot the beginning of this year, got used to the speaker and ... found an awesomely engaging series! Exellent worldbuilding and a thought-out magic system!

Started listening to 'Rivers of London' and am in the middle of 'Foxglove Summer' by now... ... and wanna talk about it...

First of all: judging by the amount of fanfic on ao3 (not much) it's a tiny fandom, which I don't get, as there seems to be plot bunny material of any couleur provided?

I have so many questions...

Summary: Abigail has earned her right to become a practitioner of magic. Now, the training begins.

At AO3. On tumblr. On Pillowfort.

Peter Grant, apprentice member of the Society of the Wise, Constable of the Metropolitan Police, had the unfortunate propensity to act (and speak) before thinking. In a crisis, this quickness was a decided virtue. If only he could learn to consider his actions more carefully in ordinary moments, Thomas reflected, he would be an exemplary wizard.

But such meticulousness was (for the moment) beyond him. Fortunately for all concerned, Peter had a certain amount of serendipitous luck to balance out the possible consequences of his thoughtlessness, and none of his rash actions (or words) had resulted in truly dire consequences so far. Indeed, several of them had turned out remarkably well, all things considered. Such was the case with his promise, two years earlier, that he would begin teaching magic to his cousin Abigail Kamara, should she pass her Latin A-levels.

The young Miss Kamara was, if anything, even more promising than her cousin. Quite intelligent, staunchly firm in her ethical thought (albeit occasionally in unorthodox ways), ferociously dedicated to pursuing her goals and—unlike Peter—not prone to distractions or leaping before she looked. All in all, Thomas Nightingale, Master of the Society of the Wise, Detective Chief Inspector of the Metropolitan Police, was quite looking forward to teaching her.
ExpandThat is, should her parents give consent. Which Peter had not considered when he so rashly promised that she should learn magic upon proving her proficiency in Latin. )

I'm sure everyone already knows, but if you're subscribed to Ben Aaronovitch's newsletter you get these little extra snippets from the RoL universe, called 'Moments'. Today we got a new one, titled Under Kite Hill and set on 14th February 2016 (so, IIRC, that's immediately after False Value). Anyway, if you want to read it, you can find it here.

What do you think?

Info about the new book coming out on the 7th April 2022. Four images under the cut. Please come talk to me in the comments (and consider this your spoiler warning, though I'm not sure a book title and blurb qualify as spoilers, but hey, better be safe than sorry).

[personal profile] beatrice_otter
[community profile] yuletide is open for nominations!

Yuletide is a long-running fanfic exchange focused on small fandoms (i.e. fandoms with fewer than 1,000 completed stories (in English, of more than 1,000 words each) combined on AO3 and ff.net). Rivers of London qualifies!

The core of Yuletide is a fiction exchange. You sign up with at least three fandoms you would be interested in receiving a story in, and at least four fandoms you would be willing to write in (along with characters from each). Everyone who signs up is assigned to someone to write a story for; everyone who signs up receives a story. Stories are revealed on December 25th, and their authors are revealed on January 1. It's a lot of fun.

However, the first step is nominations. In order to be in the tagset for people to request and offer, a fandom (and characters in that fandom) have to be nominated. Each person can nominate up to three fandoms with up to four characters each, so the more people who nominate, the larger the pool of characters we can request and offer. So, if you are planning to sign up for Yuletide, and you are planning to request a story (or offer to write one) in the RoL fandom, you might want to nominate to make sure the characters you are interested in are part of the tag set.

The same goes for any other small fandom you might be interested in writing or offering. Someone else might nominate that book or movie or obscure TV show or commercial or work of art or whatever ... but then again, they might not. Some things get nominated regularly every year, others don't, there's no guarantee, if you're thinking about participating it's best to nominate things you are interested in.

In order for a nomination to be official, it has to be made at the AO3 tagset. However, there's no way of knowing what's been nominated and what hasn't until after nominations are over and the mods go through and approve things. (They don't approve as nominations come in so that people have the opportunity to change their minds if they want to.) So there is a DW page and a spreadsheet where people say what they've nominated so that people can coordinate. (For example, Ted Lasso has been nominated twice. Two of those nominations duplicate Roy, Keely, and Rebecca, differing only in their fourth character. If one of them sees that before the nominations are done, they could change it so that they're asking for other characters instead and then there will be more characters in the tagset.) Not everyone who nominates puts it on the spreadsheet, so the spreadsheet is not a full list of everything that will be in the tagset, but it is better than nothing.

The Cover of What Abigail Did That Summer.

I thought I'd give us all a thread to discuss what we thought! How do you feel? Does anyone already have any fic, meta, art to share?

I also made a short list of content warnings over here on my blog, and if I'm missing anything (or want to ask for something specific), comment here or there and I'll add to them.
